Clear off your kitchen counters and clear your weekend afternoon—it’s time to give your favorite coffee mugs the home they deserve. This 3-tier mug stand is the ultimate weekend woodworking project: it is budget-friendly, incredibly functional, and easy enough for beginners. Using just two common boards (a 1x4x8 and a 1x2x8), you can build a beautiful, sturdy display that organizes your daily caffeine fuel while adding a touch of handmade charm to your coffee station.

Material Cut List:
From the 1x4x8 Board:
- Shelves: 3 pieces @ 16″
From the 1x2x8 Board:
- Supports / Trim:
- 2 pieces @ 2″
- 2 pieces @ 4-3/4″
- 2 pieces @ 7-1/2″
- 2 pieces @ 9″
Once your pieces are prepped, it’s time to assemble the base. Position your support pillars and secure them firmly using a combination of wood glue and brad nails for a strong, lasting hold.
Next, it’s time to install the shelves. To create the tiered effect, stagger the shelves as you move up the pillars. When placing each tier, make sure the front edge of the shelf aligns perfectly with the back edge of the shelf directly below it. Secure each shelf in place with wood glue and brad nails to ensure a level and stable finish.
This entire project only took a couple of hours to build, plus a little extra time for the glue and finish to dry. It turned out looking great, and my wife is already excited to start filling it up and displaying all her favorite coffee mugs!
